Hypnosis – Will I Pass The Test?

Monday, December 21st, 2009
Barrie St John asked:

In this article I shall be talking about suggestibility tests. The main reason any hypnotist would ever choose to utilize suggestibility testing is to get some indication as to how suggestible a person or persons may be to hypnosis.

In clinical practice, suggestibility testing isn’t generally used, because it’s of little relevance. Our therapy isn’t based on achieving hypnosis rapidly, nor do we seek to make any kind of point or impression about hypnosis.

It is in the venue of stage hypnosis where suggestibility tests can be very useful. When a stage hypnotist is preparing to put on a show, it helps him greatly if he has a way to identify which persons will be most suggestible. He will want to make these determinations as quickly as possible. Stage hypnotists still use suggestibility testing regularly. An experienced hypnotist can test a group of people together, and within a few seconds, identify the ones that stand out as good hypnotic subjects for a stage show. This means pinpointing people who will be relatively easy to hypnotize and who will take on suggestion quite readily.

There are various techniques to determine suggestibility. Some common tests include having the person clasp their hands together tightly, while listening to the hypnotist’s suggestion that the hands are super-glued together or locked in place.

Another more visually identifiable technique would have a person hold both hands out, palms up, and then imagining that they have something very heavy in one hand, like a bowling ball or a pile of books, while they have something very light in the other hand, like a feather or a helium balloon. The theory is that the hand holding the imaginary books will start to collapse. A hypnotist can then measure how quickly or how readily the suggestion was taken in by the person. This gives an indication of their level of susceptibility to hypnosis.

I might use suggestibility testing to get some indication about how suggestible a client may be, but generally, in the therapeutic setting, it’s not necessary. I’ve used it on children, because they like that sort of thing, and sure, it serves as proof of the power of the mind, but I wouldn’t use it for that purpose. I don’t generally have the need to use testing.

There are lots of tests, involving the physical body and the imagination and the sensory systems. There may be many reasons to use suggestibility testing, but generally, the tests are used to give a hypnotist some indication of how suggestible a person may be.

Test Your Hypnotizability

Saturday, December 19th, 2009
Jake Rhodes asked:

With the field of hypnosis becoming increasingly respected and accepted amongst the medical profession as well as the self improvement movement more and more people are happy to try hypnotherapy for themselves. One question often pops up in peoples’ minds though before they are willing to put their time and effort into the practice, “am I hypnotizable?”. It’s an understandable worry as learning self hypnosis takes a lot of time and energy while paying for a hypnotherapist is a major expense.

While it is a valid concern most people do not need to worry. There have been many scientific studies looking into the phenomenon of hypnosis and the rate of hypnotizability amongst various groups of people. In general 80% to 95% of all people are hypnotizable which really is a staggeringly high amount. Can you imagine if any other form of treatment had this level of success rate? Not only would the media focus a lot more attention on it but sessions would cost thousands rather than hundreds of dollars. Be that as it may though the point is that most people can be hypnotized.

There are many external and internal forces which can lower or raise your ability to be hypnotized. You want to be in a relaxed environment that is comfortable for you and using a script or hypnotherapist that will work for your personality. Some people believe that only those with low intelligence and concentration can be hypnotized, but in actuality the opposite is true.

Testing your hypnotizability has never been easier thanks to the wide range of resources on the internet. Some methods are quite obvious while others are known by only a select few, and I will let you in on a few of these ways to test your hypnotizability.

YouTube has many hypnosis sessions recorded by professional hypnotherapists that are a great way to test out how well you react to the hypnotic process. Search for the likes of Jon Rhodes, Steve G. Jones or Roger Moore and you’re guaranteed a high level of quality. You can sit at your computer and experience a hypnosis session for yourself, which is as good a way as any to see if you can be hypnotized. Similarly there are also a range of hypnosis websites that sell MP3s at very reasonable prices ($10 on up). These make for an affordable way to try hypnosis for yourself while working on a specific goal, whether you want to lose weight, improve your memory or get a better quality of sleep.

Are you a daydreamer and/or have strong powers of concentration? These qualities lend themselves very well to being hypnotized and if you possess them then it’s a virtual lock that you’ll be able to be hypnotized. The same can also be said of those who are open minded or have a vivid imagination. Test your abilities in these areas and you’re also testing your hypnotizability.

The last method I will share with you is a little stranger. In the mid 1960’s Dr. Herbert Spiegel conducted an experiment that concluded there was a direct correlation between hypnotizability and a person’s ability to roll their eyes up – the more white of the eyes that was visible the more hypnotizable the subject was. No-one has yet been able to fathom the link between these two abilities. Still it is a test you can do yourself very easily, although you will need a second person to tell you how much white of the eye is visible.

There you have it, everything you need to know to test your hypnotizability. Hypnosis is a wonderful tool for improvement and if these tests have proven you to be hypnotizable then I fully recommend you start adding hypnosis to your daily routine.

Hypnosis Session Suggestibility

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Milos Pesic asked:

The suggestibility to hypnosis session varies from one person to another. Some people have a tiny capacity, whereas some have a great talent for hypnosis. The majority is in between. This talent for being susceptible to hypnosis can be compared to that of drawing, for example.

Many researchers of hypnotism generally consider the hypnosis talent to be a fixed trait. However, in clinical practice it recently became evident that a person can amplify his or her ability to go under hypnosis. This can be compared to drawing, for example, where practice makes you a better and more skillful drawer. Very few people possess an extreme talent for being susceptible to hypnosis session. These people make excellent subjects for stage hypnosis and display abilities the rest of us can only dream of.

A suggestibility test is a test used to asses the suggestibility of a subject. Everybody in possession of a sound mind and intelligence can be hypnotized. But, not everybody can be hypnotized at the speed which is necessary for the entertainment value of a stage hypnosis. Now, this is where the hypnosis session suggestibility test comes in. The suggestibility tests vary from hand magnet tests to fall back tests and different hypnotists use different tests to assess the suggestibility of the subject during the hypnosis session.

People with developed imagination are more susceptible to hypnosis than others. Thus, artists, musicians and poets are probably the best hypnosis subjects. There are very tangible reasons for this, the prominent being the fact that those in the creative world experience greater accessibility to the subconscious owing to the nature of their greater sensitivity to internal and external impressions.

Children are also great hypnosis subjects. Since they accept orders from their parents and other grown-ups, they respond to hypnosis suggestions without questioning.

Logically enough, soldiers also make great hypnosis subjects owing to the aforementioned reasons. They are also conditioned to obey orders of their lieutenants or sergeant without questioning.

The job of the hypnotist would be much easier if all the people were susceptible to hypnosis session to the same extent as the aforementioned categories. This way, we would have a vast gallery of people to practice and research on.

Hypnosis With Chevreul’s Pendulum

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009
Adam Eason asked:

Why is it that the world of hypnosis has the cliché of the swinging pendulum?

I am going to attempt to explain… You see, the pendulum is tied to much early notions to do with hypnosis…

You know about the mind-body link, don’t you? Well, I am sure you know that when you are stressed for long periods of time in the mental department, your physical resistances and immune system are weakened – your state of mind affects your state of body. Lots of people have heard of what we term ‘mind-body’ but how many of us actually can demonstrate it in real life terms, or actually know what it all means?

And what on earth does that have to do with pendulums?

Pendulums were used to prove the world is round, as the Focault pendulum is designed to assist with.

On many hypnotherapy training courses, hypnosis professionals learn ’suggestibility tests.’ That is, showing individuals how open they are to suggestion prior to taking them (that individual) into hypnosis. It also serves to show the client that they are open to suggestion and also is useful for many other reasons.

You see, these days everyone has heard of the expression, or the words “mind-body” medicine, healthcare, system or whatever it may be… Yet real mind-body links are demonstrated perfectly and very obviously with hypnotic suggestibility tests and what is often referred to as ideo-motor responses.

Did you ever see those highly annoying headlines that unimaginative journalists write every time they interview a hypnotherapist? Something like “look into my eyes” or “you are feeling sleepy.” yet these words are never really used these days. They are often accompanied by the image of someone using a pendulum of some kind, or a swinging watch as the tool to take someone into hypnosis.

It is the pendulum and how to use it for a brilliant way to show how your mind communicates with you when you apply your mind in the right ways…

There was once a man who went by the name of Michel-Eugene Chevreul. He was a well known French chemist who in the early 1800s investigated what was initially seen as an ‘occult’ phenomenon of the pendulum and he wanted to give it a plausible scientific explanation. In 1812, Chevreul discovered the psycho-physiological basis of dowsing, though it was not publicly realised until 1833 when his work was shared.

Chevreul’s explorations and investigations showed that the pendulum effect is due to a simple, regular and very usual human reaction, but a reaction with such interesting effects that it kind of flirts with seeming to be magic, the same as Derren Brown flirts with being psychic today, giving him an air that people find fascinating… This thing with the pendulum though, was seen as some sort of mystical phenomenon for years previously… Heck, some even make that claim today! I know of people who do remote negative energy clearing on entire buildings using only a pendulum to dowse with, again, something for another day and another discussion…

So, this chap Chevreul found that if you imagine something intensely, then the human body behaves in a way as if the imagined action, event or circumstance is actually happening.

Today, Chevreul’s pendulum is used to demonstrate the astonishing and remarkably strong effects of self-hypnosis by people like me on hypnosis trainings and self-hypnosis seminars. Today though, here on the hypnosis blog, I thought I’d share with you Chevreuls experiment which you can replicate and have a go at, because it is absolutely fascinating.

The experiment which could be done by anyone of just about any age, aims to illustrate that:

Firstly, that the imagination (and some may say unconscious mind) can effect and influence physical movements. (i.e. Those not under control of the conscious mind)

Secondly, that the actions very often are sustained by the imagination (or unconscious mind) with, without the interference of the conscious will.

Thirdly and finally, that the mind can be trained by repetition.

So here is the experiment for you to have a go of….

Chevreul’s Pendulum Experiment:

Step One: First up then, grab yourself a piece of paper or card and draw a circle with about a 40-50 cm diameter or so. Mark A at the top of the circle, C at the bottom. B to the right and D to the left of the circle. Join up each letter with a line, so that you have a cross inside a circle. basically, it should look like a big circle with a cross in the middle of it dividing it into quarters, and with the letters a-d going clockwise around the points of the cross.

Step Two: If you have not got your own pendulum, then you need to make one… So go get some cotton, some string, or any other similar stuff and have it at a length of 30-35 cm. Attach a small weight to the end – you can use a ring, or anything at the end that’ll serve as the weight for the pendulum.

Step Three: Now you need to take a seat at a table with your piece of paper/card on the table in front of you. Rest your elbow on the tabletop. Hold the string between your thumb and forefinger so that the pendulum weight can hang straight down; ideally 1-2 cm above the centre of the cross pattern. Try to hold the pendulum as still and immovable as possible. Let your arm be as loose as possible while holding the string in this position.

Step Four: Now we are going to stimulate the mind, via the imagination and have some fun with this!

While holding the pendulum as still as possible with your arm as loose as possible, just imagine how it would feel if the pendulum started to swing vertically. In your mind, imagine it swinging, imagine watching it swing vertically along the line on your diagram. Don’t do anything consciously to make it swing, simply imagine as intensely as you can that the pendulum is starting to swing all on its own.

Step Five: After a couple of minutes of really engaging your imagination, you may well be finding that the pendulum actually starts swinging. It is likely that at first, it’ll be small swings and then these soon grow to wide, bold swings in the vertical direction. When you have succeeded with the vertical swings, then you can do the same to imagine what it would feel like if the pendulum instead started rotating clockwise. Once again the pendulum reads your mind and starts rotating in the way you imagined.

You do absolutely nothing, and still your thoughts made an inanimate object in your hand move in a mentally predetermined way.

Cool,eh?

Step Six: The pendulum takes tiny movements one end, magnifies them and they are expressed much more largely at the other end… So when you are imagining the pendulum swinging, then subconsciously your body makes very small, almost imperceptible movements in the right direction.

The pendulum is an energy accumulating system, so the minute imperceptible swings add up, and after a while the pendulum swings with easy to watch movements.

When you have noticed this, start to see what happens when you imagine it swinging when you are calmer, relaxed and happy, notice how it changes when you focus on different places (i.e. the tip of the pendulum or the arm holding it) and notice how a variety of different thoughts affect the receptivity of the mind to affect your body.

You can learn a massive amount about yourself by exploring with this.

The principle that Chevreul’s scientific pendulum investigation uncovered – that the human body reacts physically and chemically to imagined situations – is behind a host of important psychological theories and notions… Including being the basis for the vast majority of what we know as mind-body connections.

So there is some connection between the cliché and the reality of something useful after all.

Putting the Most Popular Myths Talking About Hypnosis to the Test

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009
Peter Saks asked:

Hello,

This short text you’re about to read will get a deeper look at beliefs related to hypnosis. From my experience I know most of the people believe hypnosis is a scam, made to suck cash out of weak people. This issue will be the first matter that we will talk about in this article.

Myth number one. Hypnosis is something unscientific, created by flower people in the 80s. It is absolutely false. Hypnosis is recognized by science, and is applied in medicine with great success. It finds usage in many situations, even police utilize it to solve crimes in which witnesses cannot recall essential details about the example, because of the tragedy they have suffered.

Myth number two. To be a hypnotist you have to possess miraculous forces. It is another example of individuals having no idea how hypnosis functions. In real world there is no peculiar ability you have to have in order to become a hypnotist, Wolberg in one of his books describes how a really small girl learned to hypnotize other individuals watching TV and then has successfully hypnotized her friends from kindergarten. But in special instances, the fact that subject of hypnosis thinks you are benefiting from mythical forces can be helpful. It simply allows you to put them into trance, much quicker.

Myth number three. You can be hypnotized counter your will. No one is able to hypnotize you if you acknowledge he is trying. However it often happens somebody is hypnotized, but just does not acknowledge it. But it is entirely different matter, because he wasn’t hypnotized regardless his will, at that time he didn’t have any knowledge about the fact he is hypnotized.

Myth number four. Hypnotized individual will do everything hypnotist commands him. A lot of individuals that have never been hypnotized believe, that when you are in a deep trance you are unconscious. But in fact even if you are in the deepest trance you can be, you are still aware and will never accept suggestions to do something regardless what you believe is right.

Myth number five. Hypnotized person gains incredible abilities. Well special part of this statement is true, when you are hypnotized you can utilize all of your abilities. This way he controls absolutely 100% of his capabilities, a state of mind which is often seen in people under extreme stress, like fighting for your life.

Myth number six. You can only hypnotize “weak” individuals, and strong individuals are immune to hypnosis. hilarious thing is that a lot of individuals believe in this lie, unaware of the fact it is the exact opposite. Strong-minded, Confident people are much more likely to get hypnotized, because they have more open, outgoing personalities and they are not afraid to get hypnotized. While weak, afraid individuals feel threatened when they are getting hypnotized.

Myth number seven. When a hypnotist screws something up, you can stay inside hypnotic trance forever. It is a complete lie. What every hypnotist knows is that putting somebody into trance is a challenge, however getting him out of it, is the easy part. In fact if you will leave someone inside the deepest trance possible, he will just go into ordinary sleep and wake up outside of the trance. You enter trance numerous times through your day, so your brain knows exactly what to do to get out of it.

I hope you found this piece of writing really informative, and as you can see there is a lot of misconception about hypnosis. The above convictions are the cause behind people treating hypnosis like a sham, or what is even worse are afraid of it. But you should connect only positive emotions with hypnosis, after all this powerful tool is a tremendous aid to hundreds of thousands of individuals who suffer from psychological issues and is great for persuading other individuals.

How to Test If Hypnosis is Real

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009
Trevor Johnson asked:

Hypnosis is a controlled subconscious activity which should either be performed by a skilled therapist in a clinic or as self-hypnosis with the use of genuine tapes and CDs. Since, the person being hypnotized essentially goes into a light slumber; it is difficult for him to test if hypnosis is real during the session itself. However, there are several ways the subject can decide if he was hypnotized for real or not after a session is complete.

Recordings: If you visit a trained clinical psychiatrist for hypnosis sessions, he will invariably give you tapes of your verbal interactions with him while you were in a trance. If you have enlisted for hypnosis sessions for self-improvement like giving up smoking etc, there may not be much of a verbal activity from your side during the session. But you can still request a recording of your breathing patterns during the session. Also, if you were hypnotized for real, you will necessarily find yourself more relaxed and alert after a session.

In addition, you can test if the hypnosis was for real with results in your behavior relating to the desired improvements for which you enlisted for therapy. For example, if you went for hypnosis to quit smoking then, one way to test if the sessions were real is to note whether you have actually stopped smoking or reduced it considerably or not.

Today, there are specialists across America using hypnosis for past-life regression. In all such sessions, the subject is necessarily given a tape or CD recording of all he said under trance while recalling his past lives. That’s a sure way to test if hypnosis is real.

In instances of having used self-hypnosis in the privacy of your bedroom, the only way to test it is by noting your behavior and mental state after the session. Post-session are you in an enhanced state of peacefulness and relaxation? Over a course of some days of regular practice has your overall emotional state improved? If ‘yes’ then, you can say hypnosis was real. If you have practiced regularly and properly, you can also find verification in your moods and emotional control.

Also, hypnosis is real when you usually drift off into deep sleep after a self-conducted session and wake up the next morning completely refreshed or, wake up a few hours and minutes later feeling as if you have had a long night’s sleep.

However, there are many fake hypnotists out there promising unusual benefits so, stay clear of them. Do not use tapes that have not been recorded by skilled and well-known therapists.

Do Subliminal Messages Really Work? A Quick Look At Subliminal Messages

Monday, December 14th, 2009
Trevor Johnson asked:

Do subliminal messages really work? This might be one of the most common questions that you’d ask once you hear about this topic. These so-called messages which communicate with your subconscious mind have been used in therapies, marketing and advertising, which makes it quite useful when it comes to communicating to a particular target audience.

Subliminal messages are messages which pass through your subconscious mind, therefore communicating directly with your brain without being conscious about it. They may be in forms of visuals or audio, spanning a wide variety of medium where these messages could be put.

Most people believe that marketers have used subliminal messages to market their products. They may insert various words in video which are so fast that only the subconscious mind tends to remember it. Others say that some audio tracks have certain messages hidden beneath the audible range of the human ear, making only the subconscious mind hear these messages.

On the other hand, you might ask again: do subliminal messages really work? The answer would be yes. Since you do not perceive these messages consciously, it gets straight to your mind and tells the message directly to your brain. The result is a more effective way of transmitting messages without having to keep the conscious mind aware.

Because of this, subliminal messages have also been used in various therapies involving audio and video. Flashing words in very short periods in a particular video or inserting inaudible recorded statements beneath audio tracks are some ways on how these subliminal messages are used in such situations. There are also self-help methods which make use of these messages, which effectively changes the way people think.

Think of these subliminal messages as a way of communicating to your inner self. With subliminal messages, you could feel more loved, feel better about yourself, and just be almost anything you want.
